Vidū jūras (At the Heart of the Sea), 2025
Composite, metal, acrylic coating
335 x 270 x 230 cm
A hot coal smouldered,
At the Heart of the Sea on a stone,
Awakening the soul,
It bends and winds,
Strokes and sparkles,
Touches the rainbow,
Mermaids’ tails in red.
/Anna Egle/
The sculpture Vidū jūras (At the Heart of the Sea) continues artist Anna Egle’s exploration of transformative forms and the layering of symbolic meanings. Its structure – from root-like, serpentine, or mermaid-tail twists to a figurative form – embodies creation as a passage from the fragmentary to the whole. The work draws on the myth of Venus/Aphrodite’s birth from sea foam, the Latvian deity Māra’s symbolism, and motifs from folk songs, foregrounding water as a bearer of life, memory, and fertility. The sculpture invites reflection on the power, fragility, and significance of water as a precondition for creation, health, and life itself.
